How to Make a Floral Bow
from wikiHowThere are many different types of bows with many different names. A "floral" bow typically has a variety of loop sizes. Larger loops are located around the outside of the bow, with the sizes gradually becoming smaller as they go towards the center, resembling petals of a blooming flower. This type of bow might have as little as four or eight loops, graduating up to as many as twenty to thirty with the loops spread apart, making various shapes.[1] Here's an easy way to make a floral bow to adorn vases, gifts, and home decor.
Steps
- Cut a thin, V-shaped slit into a foam core piece (see "Tips") with any sharp knife. It should be wide enough to insert ribbon but small enough to hold the ribbon in place.
- Hold the middle of a cut piece of ribbon over the slit. If you're using a ribbon that is shiny on one side and dull on the other, make sure that the shiny side faces down so that as you make your bow, the shiny side will form the outside of your loops.
- Fold the ribbon to make a loop on one side of the slit, then slide the ribbon into the slit. As you push the ribbon into the slit, twist it so that the shiny side faces down again.
- If you want your bow to have smaller loops in the middle, just make each loop smaller as you add ribbon into the foam core.
- When your bow is full enough, cut the ribbon at an angle.
- Slide the bow out with your thumb holding the ribbon in the middle. Foam core has a styrofoam center which won't hurt your ribbon.
- Place your wire in the middle and fold to the back. Twist the wire very tightly. See "Warnings" below.
- Move the loops into the shape desired after your wire has been added.
Tips
- Foam core is used by frame shops to hold pictures into frames. The piece you will need is around 5" to 12". Most frame shops have scraps of foam core this size and will sell for pennies.
- With this method, it's easy to change the color and type of ribbon.
- These bows are great to place down the middle of banquet tables. They gave extra color in between the bouquets of flowers.
Warnings
- The wire must be twisted very tight or the loops will move. Use pliers if needed to help you to twist the wire extremely tight.
